About The Haecksen

We are a group for technicians, hackers, makers, scientists, artists, activists in the hacker scene and those who want to be part of it. We consider ourselves queer-inclusive and we are feminist – in STEM professions as well as in the hacker scene.

The Haecksen were founded in 1988 by Rena Tangens and Barbara Thoens. Since then, we have evolved to become FINTA-inclusive as of summer 2021 and FLINTA-inclusive as of 2024. FLINTA is an abbreviation for women, lesbians, inter, non-binary, trans and agender.

Identity

We are the Haecksen, a group of FLINTA people (FLINTA: women, lesbians, inter, non-binary, trans, agender) with an interest in technology. Our aim is to promote intersectional feminist – and therefore socially relevant – perspectives within the hacker scene. We strive for a society where these views are a given. We recognize both – opportunities and risks – with regard to our technology-driven society. With our activities, we primarily address the positive aspects and contribute to their implementation. For these reasons, our work also engages with the broader community, aiming to influence the public discourse. By doing so, we aim to make technology accessible to everyone, regardless of the barriers they face. We also strive to be an accessible and supportive community, fostering connections and knowledge-sharing among our members. What we know is more important than what we don’t.
