Why Utopia Test Environment
Our first Chaos Feminist Convention is all about utopias and what they mean to us. They are often dreamt about, hard-won, and sometimes even relentlessly fictional. In today’s literature, alongside classic utopias, solarpunk stands as a strong counterpoint to the beloved dystopian sci-fi and cyberpunk stories from the founding days of the CCC, and in that spirit, we want to capture constructive visions for our own future.
Our chaos – a utopian community – right here, smack in the middle of this reality.
A setting that almost mythically symbolizes hacker identity and purpose; the unabashed subculture of techies; our space that we’ve built for ourselves and for which we pull so many strings. But it’s also a public megaphone for information security, free knowledge, and free technology – seen from the outside as impenetrable and regarded with both respect and a healthy dose of distance.
And right at the center are the Haecksen. As a decentralized queer feminist collective of hundreds in the virtual realm with only occasional meetups in the real world, the challenges of the chaos family hit home for all of us.
How much of a lived utopia truly exists in chaos? What are merely dreams, and what can we possibly bring to life in our future? Where do we draw the line between play and responsibility, especially when it comes to our chaotic togetherness? Or will our community only be complete when every one of us fully commits to our ideas and utopian ideals?
Motivation and Formats
With our new conference, we want to embrace the ideas and practice of community building within chaos, using a queer feminist perspective to explore paths to a utopian future. We’re planning curated formats for this. In addition, there will be room for spontaneity in the form of self-organized sessions, and plenty of opportunities to just have fun with it.
